The LBA’s 3rd Annual AWEAR 2012 Fashion Show

If you haven’t noticed, our last few posts were leading up to this event. Hopefully you were able to make it to the show on Tuesday, Mar 28 in the student lounge, because it was amazing!

If not, here are a few snaps we captured. Enjoy!

“Swag bags” worth $50 apiece awaited each guest at their seat.

A smiling Falisha greets guests at the registration table.

This year, The LBA and the AWEAR team worked hard to raise money for the Kettle Friendship Society, an outreach group that provides support for those suffering from mental health issues in the community.

Guests bid on items at the silent auction.

Alumni Cristin and Taz, President of the LBA, in a discusson with School of Management Instructor, Danielle Michaels.

Cat shoots us a smile as DJ JSoul warms up the crowd with some legit tracks. Really enjoyed the music.

Danielle Michaels and other first-row guests minutes before the show.

A full house takes their seats. The team, with the help of some Design students, worked hard on the beautiful deco and drapery pictured here.

SHOW TIME!! MC’s Liza and Jordan introduce the first designer of the night, Leah Mossof.

Outfit by designer Leah Mossof. Lots of nudes, metallics, bold blues and yellows, tailoring and prints!

Complete spring business casual looks from Value Village for under $20. Probably our favourite line of the show. Styling by Lauren Popadiuk.

A muted blue linen, sleeveless, collared shirt dress from the new contemporary and conscious label Avery By Wang by Annching Wang.

A fun and adorable mens’ look (from H&M, we believe) by stylist Anya Melyukova

Fierce, but feminine styling and design by designer Jen Cameron. (Apparently this was one of Advertising and PR Instructor, Stephanie Koonar, and her daughter’s favourite lines of the night!)

MC’s Jordan and Liza thank one of the designers and present her with a Langara tote.

Apologies for the picture quality! From now on, we promise to take the more difficult road and bring a real camera to take pictures with instead of with our smartphone for the next fashion show.

That’s a wrap!

We really enjoyed the LBA’s 3rd Annual AWEAR 2012 Spring Fashion Show and would like to congratulate all those involved on their inspiring work. We are proud to have attended this event and support the Kettle Friendship Society. To view more photos please visit The Langara Voice Online or look up the event on Facebook.

…but wait just a minute. We wouldn’t attend such an event without style-spotting ;) Below are some guests’ looks that we also enjoyed. (You don’t need to be a model to look good!)

See you at the next show!

Small World

If you’ve lived/worked/spent a day in Vancouver, much less gone to Langara, you’ve probably experienced how small our city can feel sometimes. Meeting people in classes or within your program and realizing that you know so-and-so and your new acquaintance does too…

That’s kind of how this post fell into place.

Aside from blogging Falcon Fashion, Kim also blogs for TheModline.com, a local online magazine. She met Alexandra, local blogger To Vogue or Bust and Year 2 Journalism student/Langara Voice editor at River Rock Casino en route to a blogger event at Steveston’s Violet Hill Boutique (story + pictures here). They got to chatting (naturally) and decided to feature each other! (Kim on The Voice, and Alexandra on Falcon Fashion).

A warm welcome to Alexandra!

She’s wearing: Lost and Found blazer, Club Monaco linen top and scarf, Raven Denim skinnies, H&M booties, Keltie Leanne Designs necklace, Mary Nichols bag

This dual-post involved meeting Alexandra and Ruman (pictured below) on a bright Friday, where we learned that Alexandra’s favourite childhood recess snack was fruit roll-ups and that if she didn’t have class (which she didn’t), she’d be out enjoying the sun (which she did).

A big thank-you to Alexandra and Ruman for meeting with us and for all The Voice-Falcon Fashion love! Be sure to keep an eye out for this week’s issue ;)

Have a great week!

Be Yourself

As the end of the semester approaches, we’ve started to reflect on our adventures with Falcon Fashion

We are so grateful for all the support, interest and positive vibes from everyone who’s encountered or participated in the blog. We’ve met so many cool people, each of whom embody their own distinct style.

This is another special “first” post for us because we spotted these Falcons alongside Audrey, a Langara Voice journalist (stay tuned for our interview in this week’s paper).

1.

Say hello to Lalvuat, a sweet an Arts and Science student that we spotted in the LSU student lounge.

Lalvuat is comfortable and confident with her fun style and warmed up easily in front of the camera. She wasn’t afraid to share who she is with us, and we love that.

She’s wearing: Zara beanie and boots, bow sweater and leather detail leggings purchased online

2.

Next, we have Carson, an Environmental Studies student we approached at Starbucks after making a full round of the campus for a guy-style candidate.

Random facts: If Carson didn’t have class, he’d be skiing on a local mountain. Or possibly eating Oreos, which were his favourite recess snack as a kid. Or, you never know, skiing on a local mountain AND eating Oreos. (Why not?)

After chatting with Carson and hearing his take on “style,” we’d like to encourage everyone to be themselves. It’s not about the brands you’re wearing, but how you carry yourself. We chose Carson because he stood out in a simple, relaxed way.

He’s wearing: German military jacket, Mark’s v-neck tee, Levi’s jeans, Vans shoes

Pictured with him is Audrey McKinnon, The Voice journalist that interviewed us for this week’s paper.

As always, thanks to everyone we style-spotted for allowing us to feature them and to Audrey for getting to know us.

Hope you’re enjoying your Sunday!

Spring Forward

Happy first week of spring, guys! Although it doesn’t quite feel like it just yet (we wore mittens to sleep last night), spring is certainly here.

While we’re a little envious over Eastern Canada’s 30 degree weather, we are happy to welcome the hints of spring we’ve been slowly noticing after we moved our clocks ahead: chirping birds, budding greens, sunshine, and colour in our closests.

With that being said, we’d love for you to meet Catherine, a BBA Marketing student who is currently working with Zlata (see post below) on the upcoming AWEAR Charity Fashion Show on March 27 at 6pm in the student lounge of the library.

We found Cat selling tickets to their event in the foyer yesterday morning.

She’s wearing: Zara neon tweed jacket, skinny jeans (her favourite) and leather boots, Forever 21 blouse and earrings

We are fans of Cat’s bright look. Her fitted jacket with zipper details is just the right amount of punch to spring forward with this season’s colour trend. Her pairing of simple accessories and bright blue nail polish compliment her classic white and denim.

If Cat didn’t have class today, she’d be painting her nails (which is our new obsession too, as of late)!

We hope this look encourages you to find the courage to don some neon. Don’t be afraid - be adventurous! Happy Spring :)

It’s all in the details

We love meeting new people and scouting new looks, but sometimes busy schedules make it hard to make that connection. (Mid-terms, anyone?)

Fortunately for us, the universe was kind today, and we got the chance to sit down with a girl we’ve been dying to share 5 minutes with.

Everyone, please welcome Zlata.

Zlata is an ambitious and very busy BBA Marketing student in her final semester (congratulations!). In fact, if she didn’t have class today, she’d probably be doing homework or making YouTube videos. She is currently leading a team of Special Events Marketing and Planning students who are tirelessly working on The 3rd Annual AWEAR Charity Fashion Show.

The student-run show is working with the LBA to present its 3rd annual fashion show in support of The Kettle Friendship Society, a Vancouver outreach society that provides support to those dealing with mental health issues in our community.

The show will feature a fresh take on business casual spring styles by local designers Jen Cameron and Leah Mossoff, and stylists Anya Melyukova and Lauren Popaduk.

For more information on the show, please scroll to the end of this post.

Zlata is wearing: Tribal print Forever 21 blouse and gold spikes statement necklace, basic black top, AA (American Apparel) leggings, brown combat boots from Seattle, Kenneth Cole watch

As a Project Manager and stylish Langara student, Zlata shows a working knowledge that it’s all in the details.

Statement necklaces, prints and watches are all trends to follow this fashion season.

“Be daring, be first, be different, be just.”

Random fact: As a kid, Zlata was a fan of Dunkaroos. (This is turning out to be not so random after all! Our childhoods seem to be bright with fond memories of snacking on Dunkaroos.)

Big thanks to Zlata for scheduling time to meet with us. We had fun getting to know her and some of her team members. We’ll see you at the show! ;)

Ketchup & Mustard

After uploading this post’s photos and staring at the thumbnails deciding which shots to use, all I could conclude with was: this looks like ketchup and mustard (red wall, mustard jeans).

Not that that’s a bad thing…just, humour me; we’re getting down to the last portion of the semester, and my sleeping patterns are cray as of late. Cray sleeping patterns = cray brain = cray posts.

With that being said, we’d like to introduce you to Erin.

We found this adorable Arts and Science transfer student sitting in one of those grey chairs in the LSU, reading a book by the window, under the shade of what appeared to be a large, potted tropical plant.

Say “hey!” to Erin!

She’s wearing: Short-sleeve button-down, mustard jeggings, brown leather watch, braided belt and flats*

We like Erin’s look because of her coloured denim. Coloured pants (and colour in general, actually) are a huge trend for this spring, and we predict it will stay with us into summer. She’s kept it simple and crisp with the white button-down, but interesting with the lime green nail polish. Love that subtle punch of colour. Reminds us of Skittles.

*We got so caught up in conversation that we didn’t catch where Erin picked up her pieces. Sorry everyone :S

Random facts: Erin’s favourite recess snack as a kid was Gushers (this seems to be the popular answer). And if she didn’t have class today, she’d be walking in the sunshine.

Hope you’re having a good week!

Alumni Post: She [ft.] Him | Kat ft. Roy

If you’ve been following on Twitter, you’ll know that we’re pretty excited about this post, because we’ve managed another first - an alumni post! (YAY!) We journeyed into the lovely spring sunshine and met Katrina on Main Street after class.

Meet Katrina!

Kat is an alumni from the Fine Arts Program and is an Assistant Store Manager at the awesome, awesome, awesome local consignment boutique, Front & Company (voted Best Vintage Clothing Store 2012 by WE).

She’s wearing: Everything Katrina is wearing is consignment (no branded clothing), with the exception of these accessories: Stussy earrings, Ray Ban sunglasses, necklace design by Karen La

We are fans of Kat’s look because it is what we’ve been on the hunt for for weeks: an original spring look that offers warmth with splashes of colour, layers, texture, accessories and - best of all - NO grey!

Love the detail on the boots! How will you be bringing spring into your step?

Random fact: As a kid, Kat’s favourite recess snack was cookies. Mmm, cookies. And if she didn’t have [work] today, she’d be baking cookies and watching an old movie (the perfect way to spend a day off).

Big thanks again to Kat for being our first alumni post and to Roy (above) for being mini-featured!

xx

If you’d like to add a pop of spring to your wardrobe, we recommend Front & Co. They currently have a Facebook contest going on for a chance to win $100 to shop at their store! Just like their page here

For inspiration or to check out their style-spots and staff picks visit their blog. We spotted someone we know, maybe you will too ;)

Here comes the sun

We are thrilled to feature Rochelle, a dear friend who has a contagious smile, great style, and is always fun to hang with.

Rochelle is a Term 5 Nursing student who, if she didn’t have class or clinical today, would be at home knitting! We caught up over coffee and chai outside in the snow, I mean sunshine (you lied, Weather Network!), on Thursday afternoon.

Everybody, welcome Rochelle!

She’s wearing: Plenty ONLY anorak, vintage sweater (her dad’s), Vera Wang jeans, shoes from London, Macy’s ring

We like how she balanced the creams and khaki of her outfit with dark denim, caramel nail polish, and simple jewelry.

This post was a lot of fun, and the sunshine just seemed to magnify our energy. Of the many highlights discussed, our favourite line from the day is:

(On posing for pictures) “What do I do with my legs?!”

Ah, #fashionblogproblems
